If you had the power to enter men's minds and convince them that you're a god, would you use it? That's the choice that Verl, a young singer of Norgondy, must face. Trained by the tellerwoman Merind to telepathically touch the god-spot in people's minds, Verl holds the ultimate -- and deadly -- power to control the masses -- by creating a new god they can't help but believe in. Together they help their friend Crel and his dancing bear become the Bearman, the shapeshifting Reaper God who leads the people of Norgondy into war against their usurper queen. Singer of Norgondy is a fantasy novel of revolt and revenge, deception and intrigue. "...The strongest elements of Winston’s novel are the detailed descriptions of Norgondy, its rituals and its religious conflicts. Merind’s people hold a celebration each year called Festival Week, and Winston’s descriptions of the event are lively. Verl and Crel are appealing heroes who use courage and ingenuity to fulfill their destinies. In the large supporting cast, each character has a unique back story, and Winston adeptly balances multiple subplots while keeping a tight focus on the main plotline..." --- Kirkus Review For maps and more stories of the world of Colonium see http//www.holdenstone.com

I picked this up for my new Kindle after reading George R.R. Martin's last Game of Thrones book. It follows very well--both authors write excellent secondary world fantasy with complex characters whose conflicting goals drive most of the plot action. Where this book really stands out is the author's ability to do so without getting overly complex in number of characters and societies to keep up with, but you get a sense of a fully-fleshed out world with a rich history. The three main protagonists are distinct characters with their own goals that sometimes coincide, often times not, which is one of the things that makes the book so interesting. It's not simple good and evil--there is a lot of messy gray area. I don't want to spoil the ending, but I can say that the author leads to it well, making it feel inevitable, but with some surprises, and tying up loose ends while making me feel I would definitely like to read more in this world and with these characters. The only downside? I wish it was longer and went into more detail in places!

Singer of Norgondy Colonium Susan Shell Winston 9781492225904 Books Reviews

If you've ever been totally immersed in another world, this book is for you. Susan Shell Winston thought through every detail, painting a vivid and colorful world that alludes to pastoral Medieval Northern Europe. I'm tempted to say the world is like a cross between George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones series, and Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar Tapestry trilogy. The characters in this one are easy to identify with and like, and the battle scenes are awesome. If you read it, find me on Goodreads and let's discuss!
Highly thought out world with fascinating characters. I rank this one with the likes of Stephen R. Donaldson and George R.R. Martin. I eagerly await more works from this author.
Written in at times poetic language, Singer of Norgondy captures the imagination with a view of adventure and fate in a different world.
The world building here is superb. I enjoyed my time in this world and fell in love with the characters. Excellent writing.
I don't normally read this type of book but seeing as the author is my younger sister I thought I'd give it a try and was considerably astonished at the content and the way she made the characters actually come alive for me.
I would truly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy and wants to experience this through the eyes of the author.
Never predictable! The author builds a rich world with intricate cultures and history that will draw you in. This story doesn't fall victim to the common genre pitfall of characters that are pure good or pure evil, they behave like real humans- at times selfish and at times noble and rarely entirely honest.
This is outside my "usual" for reading, but holy cow, this author is amazing! Thank goodness for book recommendations or I would have never stumbled across this gem! The descriptions are amazing, the characters are fantastic and the story is like nothing I have ever encountered. Well Done!

If you are looking for something that you can truly immerse yourself in, do yourself a favor, BUY THIS! You won't regret it.
