This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
The Káfirs of the HinduKush George Scott Robertson Books
I was thrilled to be able to find and read this book. The kindle edition suffers from many conversion errors. Not just a few, but MANY, but it was worth the read. Robertson, a doctor and player in the great game, was the right man of his time to be sent by the British Raj into the land of the infidels. He was a typical gentleman Englishman, eager to see and discover new places, and boy, did he ever when he was able to penetrate the then mysterious land of the Kafirs. The Kafirs lived in a mountainous gorge ridden area in which clan and tribe were the dominant form of government and poly-theism was its form of religion. Robertson, with Western bias, was able to paint with broad brush strokes, most likely the one and only western view of this culture before it was destroyed a couple years later in the late 1890's by the iron emir of Afghanistan in the name of the religion of the prophet of Arabia, as usual at the point of a sword. Robertson's ethnological observations are tedious at times but well worth the time and effort to read them. The book is also illustrated.Product details
